The
Shira Plateau via the Western Breach of Mount Kilimanjaro is one
of the least frequented and therefore most attractive of routes
to the roof of Africa. Whilst requiring no technical mountain
experience you will need to be fit in order to enjoy this adventure.
Day
1
Arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport you will be met
by our representative and transferred to the Mountain Village
Lodge to enjoy your first night under clear African skies.
Day 2
After a nourishing breakfast we will take you to Ndarakwai Camp
nestling into the lower slopes to the West of Kilimanjaro, the
ranch is a tourist destination to its own right and is a marvellous
place to acclimatise to the altitude approaching 5000 feet above
sea level. A short walk in the afternoon will allow you to shake
off the torpor of international air travel and an evening game
drive will introduce you the ranches’ resident giraffe,
buffalo, antelope and magnificent elephant. Most importantly you
will meet the rest of the group with whom you are to climb and
the guides and porters who will escort you to the summit.
Day 3
After breakfast we will take you on the short drive to the park
gate in order to meet up with your guides and porters. A 3 or
4 hours walk through the undisturbed bush may afford you glimpses
of colobus monkeys or the spoor of elephant before emerging at
your first camp – that will be pitched and ready for your
arrival.
Day 4
The following morning an hour and a half walking will see you
climb through Montane forest and emerge at the Hagania zone. In

the Western slopes of the Kibo Massif. Camping in the shadow of
the peaks at about 12,500 feet the sunset and sunrise at this
spot is one of the joys of climbing Kili.

Tower. At 14,300 feet you will be grateful for the chance to acclimatize
further as you gaze in wonder at your final ascent route up the
Western Breach.
